WTC Final: Steve Smith feels humiliated after being fired by a part-time employee Markram, Aiden

Steve Smith admitted he was more frustrated than disappointed with his dismissal to part-time bowler Aiden Markram on Day 1 of the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s, after a vital innings of 66 from 112 balls.

He humorously recounted his reaction during the press conference:
“Don’t nick the part-time off-spinner. Down the slope. I’m still trying to fathom how I’ve done that.”

Smith emphasized focusing on adapting to the pitch’s evolving behavior, expecting variable bounce and increased spin as the match progresses. He added:
“It might take a bit more spin as the game wears on… bounce is going to be variable.”

Day 1 Recap:

  • Australia posted 212 all out, with Smith’s 66 and Beau Webster’s 72 rescuing the innings.

  • South Africa were in trouble at 43/4 by stumps, trailing by 169 runs, as Australia’s pace attack struck early.

Smith is optimistic heading into the next innings, hoping for early wickets to secure a commanding position and maintain momentum toward retaining the title.
