Starting today, UPI payments in India will get significantly faster and more reliable, thanks to new guidelines from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Here’s what’s changing:
-
Faster transaction status: If a UPI payment fails or gets stuck, you’ll now know the outcome in just 10 seconds instead of waiting 30 seconds or more.
-
Quicker processing time: A typical transaction (like scanning a QR code and paying at a shop) will now complete in 15 seconds, down from around 30 seconds earlier.
-
Better handling of pending payments: Apps can now check on a stuck transaction within 45–60 seconds, instead of waiting 90 seconds, helping them fix issues more quickly.
-
Automatic failure detection: If a transaction doesn’t even reach the UPI system (due to signal loss or timeout), it will now automatically be marked as failed, saving you from unnecessary delays.
-
Limited retries: Apps and banks can check the status of a payment up to three times within two hours, preventing system overload.
What this means for you:
-
Faster confirmations when sending or receiving money
-
Less confusion in case of failed transactions
-
More confidence while using UPI for daily payments
Whether you’re paying a friend, a vendor, or your electricity bill, the new rules aim to make your UPI experience smoother and less stressful.
