Jannik Sinner has reinstated his former fitness coach Umberto Ferrara ahead of the Cincinnati Open and US Open, aiming to restore continuity and stability in his training setup. The move comes after careful consultation with his management and marks a significant step in rebuilding his support team following last year’s doping controversy.
Ferrara, along with physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi, was previously removed from Sinner’s team after the tennis star tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance. The source was later identified as inadvertent contamination: Naldi had used a non-sterilised spray bottle provided by Ferrara, which transferred the substance to Sinner’s wound. An independent tribunal ruled that Sinner bore no fault or negligence, and although he received a three-month WADA ban, he was cleared to return earlier this year.
In the aftermath, Sinner had openly expressed a loss of trust in his team, saying he needed "some clean air" to move forward. Ferrara went on to work with Matteo Berrettini and remained active in elite tennis. His return now signals mended relationships and a renewed belief in their professional compatibility.
Sinner has rebounded strongly in 2025, finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros, then defeating him to win his first Wimbledon title. As he enters the US hard-court season—where his best US Open result was a quarterfinal in 2022—Ferrara’s re-entry could provide the physical consistency and emotional reassurance Sinner needs to sustain his breakthrough year.
