After the ice bucket, Netas and Babus now face a governance challenge: Dikhao, Theek Karke

“Theek Karke Dikhao” Challenge: India’s New Viral Civic Movement

What is it?
“Theek Karke Dikhao” (Fix it, if you can) is a viral social media challenge that began as a citizen-led campaign demanding politicians and bureaucrats address everyday civic issues — broken roads, garbage piles, overflowing drains, and crumbling infrastructure.

Who started it?
The challenge was launched by an anonymous Uttar Pradesh-based activist-influencer, Khurpenchh, known for spotlighting social and bureaucratic failures on X (formerly Twitter).

How did it begin?
On June 29, after receiving a complaint about a missing road in a Jaipur housing society, Khurpenchh tagged Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in a post. The MLA's response inspired the nationwide rollout of the challenge on June 30.

Why is it working?

  • People are posting “Reality vs Potential” images using AI tools, showing how civic spaces could look if maintained.

  • Every post is a direct dare to local authorities: “Fix it, clean it, if you can.

  • The hashtag #YeTheekKarkeDikhao is trending, with over 1.5 lakh tweets and growing.

Cultural traction:
The campaign has even adopted a pop culture spin — borrowing Honey Singh’s “Ye Karke Dikhao” hook line — and is drawing attention from influencers and meme pages alike.

Real-world response:

  • Some officials have begun to respond.

  • Citizens are geo-tagging problems with specific locations.

  • Local issues are going national through crowdsourced pressure.

Symbolic commentary:
One viral video breaks down bureaucratic delay tactics as:

  • A – Avoid responsibility

  • B – Bypass accountability

  • C – Confuse the chain of command

  • D – Delay action

Why it matters:
In a digital age where both netas and babus actively publicize achievements online, the public is using the same platforms to hold them accountable. This grassroots campaign is not just a hashtag — it’s becoming a form of digital civil disobedience.
