After seven years of marriage, Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap announce their separation

Saina Nehwal, one of India’s most celebrated badminton icons, has announced her separation from husband and long-time partner Parupalli Kashyap, ending a nearly seven-year marriage that had become emblematic of a rare and enduring sports partnership.

The news broke late on Sunday, July 13, via Saina’s Instagram statement, where she wrote:

"Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We're choosing peace, growth, and healing—for ourselves and each other. I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time."

A Relationship Built on Shared Passion

Saina and Parupalli’s journey began at Pullela Gopichand’s academy in Hyderabad, where they trained side-by-side as young aspirants. Their bond — forged through shared victories, grueling training sessions, and mutual respect — blossomed over a decade-long relationship that culminated in marriage in 2018.

  • Saina, the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in badminton (bronze, 2012) and achieve the World No. 1 ranking, carved a legacy as one of the all-time greats in Indian sport.

  • Kashyap, a former top-10 player, earned recognition in his own right, notably winning gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and consistently representing India on the international circuit.

More Than Just a Couple — A Team

After retiring from professional badminton, Kashyap transitioned into coaching, playing a pivotal role in Saina’s later career, particularly during her injury-riddled years post-2016. As her coach, mentor, and partner, he was a fixture courtside, offering tactical insights and unflinching support.

Their dynamic evolved from fellow players to a strategic athlete-coach duo, notably during Saina’s stunning win over PV Sindhu at the 2019 Nationals — a victory masterminded with Kashyap’s tactical backing.

The Separation and What It Means

While Saina has spoken publicly, Kashyap has yet to issue a statement on the separation.

The announcement marks the end of one of Indian sport’s most visible and admired relationships. Yet, both have emphasized dignity, privacy, and mutual respect as they move forward separately.

Saina’s last professional match came in June 2023, and though she hasn’t formally retired, speculation about her future in the sport may intensify following this personal development.

A Quiet Farewell to a Shared Chapter

Saina and Kashyap’s story was never just about romance; it was a partnership of equals, built on dreams, grit, and shared sacrifice. Their split, while personal, resonates across India’s sporting circles — not as a scandal, but as a reminder that even the strongest bonds sometimes reach a crossroads.

Fans, fellow athletes, and the wider badminton fraternity are expected to rally around both players with support and gratitude for the legacy they’ve left — both individually and together.
