Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting at the Parliament complex on Monday amid a chaotic opening to the Monsoon Session, as Opposition parties disrupted Lok Sabha proceedings with demands for an urgent discussion on Operation Sindoor. The meeting, attended by key cabinet ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, JP Nadda, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, S. Jaishankar, and others, was convened to strategize amid the growing pressure from the Opposition.
The Monsoon Session began with turbulence, witnessing four adjournments on its first day. The Opposition raised slogans and insisted on a full debate on Operation Sindoor—a covert Indian military operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 dead. Speaker Om Birla offered to allow a full discussion on the matter post–Question Hour, but disruptions persisted.
Despite the protests, the government has committed 16 hours in the Lok Sabha and 9 hours in the Rajya Sabha for a structured debate on Operation Sindoor. Additionally, 12 hours have been allocated for discussions on the Income Tax Amendment Bill.
Meanwhile, Parliament witnessed another significant development as impeachment proceedings were initiated against Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma. A motion signed by 152 Lok Sabha MPs—crossing the constitutional threshold of 100 signatures—was submitted to Speaker Om Birla. This was followed by a similar motion in the Rajya Sabha, where over 50 MPs, including members from BJP, Congress, TDP, JDU, CPM, and others, signed in support.
The judge is under scrutiny following the discovery of burnt, unaccounted cash at his official residence during a March 15 fire incident. While Justice Varma has denied wrongdoing, a Supreme Court-appointed inquiry panel determined that he and his family had access to the room where the charred notes were found. The panel concluded that the misconduct was “serious enough to warrant removal.”
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, in his role as Rajya Sabha Chairman, confirmed receipt of the motion and instructed that the process to move forward with impeachment be initiated. Under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution, the process now awaits further parliamentary scrutiny and eventual Presidential assent.
This Monsoon Session is shaping up to be a politically charged period, with debates on national security, judicial accountability, and tax reforms poised to dominate the agenda.
