ChatGPT down: Many users are unable to log in as the AI chatbot displays an unexpected activity error to them

OpenAI has now confirmed that all services have fully recovered following a major global outage that affected ChatGPT and other OpenAI tools like Sora, Codex, and the GPT API. According to the latest update on OpenAI’s status page, the company said:

“All impacted services have now fully recovered.”

What Happened

The disruption began early on the morning of July 16 (around 6 AM IST) and peaked about an hour later. Key issues reported included:

  • Users being locked out of ChatGPT

  • Blank chat screens

  • Login loops

  • Lost conversation data

  • API call failures

  • Performance delays in Sora and Codex

OpenAI initially reported “elevated error rates” and “degraded performance” across its products. A specific issue was noted with ChatGPT’s connectors, which were unexpectedly auto-enabled.

Who Was Affected

The outage was global, but heavy user complaints emerged from:

  • India

  • Other parts of Asia

  • The United States

  • Europe

Developers relying on Codex and creatives using Sora for video generation experienced delays and tool unresponsiveness.

Context

This was the second major outage for OpenAI in the last month. While the company has restored services, no detailed cause for today’s outage has been disclosed yet. This recurring instability is sparking concern among businesses and professionals dependent on OpenAI’s tools.
