England's batting coach is tired of Shubman Gill's batting supremacy against India

Shubman Gill's monumental performance in the Birmingham Test has left a lasting impact, not just on the match but on England’s morale. With scores of 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, Gill amassed a staggering 430 runs, tormenting the English bowling unit and commanding admiration from even the opposition’s camp.

England's batting coach Marcus Trescothick, speaking on BBC Test Match Special, couldn’t hide his exasperated awe. “I’m fed up with watching him bat,” he remarked with a half-smile, acknowledging Gill’s brilliance despite the damage it had caused his team. “Getting 250 and then another 150 – that’s pretty special.” He lauded Gill’s dedication, concentration, fitness, and skill, calling it a rare combination not often seen in the modern game.

Gill’s innings were not just long, but authoritative. He cracked 43 fours and 11 sixes across the two knocks, effortlessly finding gaps and clearing boundaries, often off good balls. His initial hesitance in the first innings quickly turned into an all-out exhibition of strokeplay, and by the second innings, England’s bowlers looked out of answers.

Backing Gill were consistent performances from KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja, each notching fifties and ensuring England stayed on the field longer than they’d have liked. India’s second-innings total pushed the match nearly out of reach, leaving only weather or a miracle as England’s lifeline.

However, India’s decision to delay the declaration might spark debate. With rain forecast on Day 5, critics may argue the call should have come earlier to maximize their win chances. Still, the commanding lead and the sheer scale of Gill’s effort mean this Test will be remembered for his batting masterclass above all else.

If the weather holds, it’s India’s match to lose. But regardless of the final result, Shubman Gill’s name is now etched in the history books as one of the few to dominate a Test in such commanding fashion in English conditions.
