Apple appears to be gearing up to enter the foldable smartphone market, with growing speculation and multiple reports indicating that the company could release its first folding iPhone by 2026. Although Apple has yet to make an official announcement, industry insiders and market analysts suggest that the new device could debut alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in the latter half of 2026. This device, if launched, would mark a significant shift in Apple’s hardware design strategy — possibly the biggest since the introduction of the iPhone X. The foldable iPhone is rumored to adopt a book-style folding design, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, featuring a spacious inner display and a smaller secondary cover screen for quick and convenient access to essential functions without fully opening the phone.
One of the key details comes from a report by JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee, as cited by CNBC, who claims the upcoming foldable iPhone will boast a 7.8-inch internal screen paired with a 5.5-inch external display. While these measurements are slightly more compact than Samsung’s current foldables, Apple may be focusing on delivering a sleeker and more refined aesthetic. Chatterjee also suggests that Apple is working to eliminate the noticeable crease that commonly affects foldable displays, possibly through enhanced hinge mechanics or the use of more advanced flexible screen materials. If successful, this could allow Apple’s foldable iPhone to stand out with a more polished look and smoother user experience than current market offerings.
Price-wise, the foldable iPhone is expected to enter the ultra-premium segment, with reports suggesting a starting price of around $1,999 — roughly ₹1.75 lakh in India. Despite the steep cost, analysts believe Apple could sell several million units within a few years of launch, generating billions in revenue and cementing its place in the high-end foldable device market. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also supported the 2026 launch window, stating that Apple is planning a major reveal towards the end of next year.
On the hardware front, leaks point to a lightweight, ultra-slim profile — potentially just 4.5mm thick when unfolded. Apple might ditch its traditional Face ID system in favor of a side-mounted Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which could better accommodate the thin chassis. Additionally, the device may feature a dual-camera setup on the back and introduce a new front-facing camera technology, referred to in reports as a Meta Lens, which may provide improved image capture and augmented reality capabilities.
In terms of software, Apple is reportedly developing a version of iOS tailored specifically for foldable devices. This customized OS could include advanced multitasking features, enhanced support for split-screen use, and even compatibility with the Apple Pencil, allowing users to take advantage of the larger display for drawing, note-taking, and creative tasks. With China identified as a major target market — given its already strong adoption of foldable phones — Apple seems poised to tap into a growing user base.
