In order to optimize operations, Walmart eliminates hundreds of jobs: Report

Walmart is continuing its workforce restructuring by eliminating hundreds of store-support roles, according to a report by Bloomberg News. This marks another step in the retail giant’s efforts to streamline its operations and eliminate organizational layers that slow down decision-making.

One of the key roles being cut is that of the market coordinator—a corporate-level position that assists market managers overseeing multiple store managers. The removal of this role aims to reduce overlap and increase agility in operations by allowing decisions to move more directly from top leadership to stores.

In addition, Walmart is also cutting several training-related positions within its Walmart Academy, the internal training program designed to upskill store employees and managers. Some coaches and coordinators from the academy are being reassigned rather than laid off immediately. These individuals will be offered roles as store-level coaches at nearby Walmart locations, reflecting a shift in how the company trains and deploys talent.

This restructuring follows earlier job cuts made in 2025, including:

  • Around 1,500 layoffs in areas like the global tech division, eCommerce fulfilment teams, and Walmart Connect (its advertising business).

  • The closure of the North Carolina office, with employees moved to hubs in California and Arkansas.

Walmart, which remains the largest private employer in the U.S. with nearly 1.6 million American workers and 2.1 million globally, appears to be refocusing on operational efficiency amid economic pressures, rising costs, and increased competition from online and omnichannel retailers.

Although no official statement has been released by Walmart regarding this latest round of cuts, the move signals a clear intent to maintain competitiveness by becoming leaner, faster, and more directly managed at the store level.
