In response to the oval pitch row, Shubman Gill says there are no guidelines regarding the 2.5-meter restriction

India captain Shubman Gill has broken his silence on the controversy that unfolded at The Oval involving head coach Gautam Gambhir and pitch curator Lee Fortis. The incident stemmed from a confrontation between Gambhir and Fortis, in which the curator allegedly prevented the Indian camp from getting a close look at the pitch, citing a supposed 2.5-metre rule. The argument escalated when Fortis reportedly raised his voice at the Indian support staff, which further aggravated Gambhir.

Offering his perspective, Gill clarified that no official instruction regarding maintaining a 2.5-metre distance from the pitch was ever communicated to the team. He emphasized that it's a common practice in cricket for players, especially captains and coaches, to examine the pitch closely, provided they are barefoot or wearing rubber spikes. “As far as I remember, there's no such instruction,” Gill stated, adding that he was unaware of any justification for the curator’s aggressive stance, especially given that similar inspections had occurred in previous matches without issue.

He went on to label the altercation as “absolutely unnecessary,” underscoring that both captains and coaches are well within their rights to closely assess the pitch. According to Gill, the situation could have been handled with more professionalism, as there was nothing out of the ordinary in what Gambhir and the staff were doing. “It’s not the first time we've been having a look at the wicket,” he reiterated, defending the Indian team’s actions.

Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had earlier shed light on the altercation, explaining that the tone Fortis used when addressing the Indian staff was uncalled for, which ultimately provoked Gambhir’s reaction. The incident has added an edge to what was already a tense series, especially after India declined Ben Stokes' offer to call off the fourth Test early due to poor weather conditions.

With tensions running high, the upcoming fifth Test at The Oval, set to begin on July 31, now carries more weight—not just in terms of cricketing stakes but also team morale and pride. How India responds to the drama off the field with their performance on it will be closely watched by fans and experts alike.
