Is Liam Dawson a wise choice for England in the Manchester Test match against India

After Shoaib Bashir was ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against India, England’s selectors faced a spin conundrum heading into the crucial fourth Test in Manchester. Although spin hadn’t been a dominant factor in the series thus far, relying solely on Joe Root’s part-time off-spin was deemed too risky — especially in the event that the pace attack faltered.

In a surprise move, England turned to Liam Dawson, who was called up ahead of more expected choices like Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, and Jack Leach. The selection raised eyebrows, primarily because:

  • Dawson hasn’t played a Test since 2017, and has only 3 Tests to his name.

  • He’s been a consistent performer in domestic cricket, especially for Hampshire, but hasn’t been in England’s red-ball plans for several years.

  • His recall suggests England were looking for a reliable, experienced spinner who could hold an end, contribute with the bat, and offer control — particularly in Manchester, where conditions may assist spin more than previous venues.

Why Not Others?

  • Rehan Ahmed: Though a promising leg-spinner, he has been expensive and lacked consistency at the Test level.

  • Tom Hartley: Featured earlier in the series and showed potential, but England may have felt the need for a more experienced and all-round option.

  • Jack Leach: Still recovering from injury and unavailable for selection.

What Dawson Brings:

  • A left-arm orthodox spinner with subtle variations and excellent control.

  • A handy lower-order batter, often capable of frustrating bowling attacks.

  • A seasoned campaigner with years of county experience, who can handle high-pressure moments.

Context:

The choice reflects England’s broader strategy under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, where horses-for-courses selections and bold calls have become the norm. While Dawson’s return might not have been predicted, it aligns with their proactive, flexible approach to squad management.

Now, with the series in the balance, all eyes will be on how Dawson performs in his long-awaited return — and whether England’s gamble pays off.
