Kunal Kamra's humorous jab at the Maharashtra Assembly fight, Hum Hinge Kamyaab

Comedian Kunal Kamra has once again stirred the political pot with a satirical video targeting the Maharashtra Assembly chaos, cleverly dubbing the combatants “Lawbreakers” in a montage laced with irony and biting humor. Set to his offbeat version of the classic protest anthem “Hum Honge Kamyaab,” the video captures the recent scuffle between BJP and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) supporters, alongside brief, unflattering clips of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, making Kamra’s critique of the Mahayuti alliance crystal clear.

Kamra’s Ongoing Satirical Campaign

Kamra had previously used the same satirical song during his March stand-up special “Naya Bharat,” in which he controversially referred to Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) in a parody of a Bollywood song. That performance drew strong backlash from Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leaders, leading to:

  • A formal complaint against him.

  • Yuva Sena members vandalizing the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, where the special was filmed.

Despite this, Kamra has remained defiant, refusing to apologise and condemning the use of violence and threats to stifle political satire. His latest post — released in the wake of the Vidhan Bhavan brawl — signals a continued critique of the political instability and alleged erosion of democratic norms in the state.

Background: The Assembly Brawl

The incident that inspired Kamra’s video took place inside the Maharashtra Legislature complex, where supporters of BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar and NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad were caught on camera trading blows near the main entrance. Security personnel struggled to contain the violent altercation.

The fight reportedly stemmed from a previous clash between the two MLAs, during which Awhad accused Padalkar of intentionally slamming a car door on him. The tension escalated the next day when supporters of both leaders clashed, resulting in two detentions.

Political Fallout

  • Padalkar later apologised, calling the incident “unfortunate” and expressing regret to both the Assembly Speaker and Council Chairperson.

  • CM Fadnavis condemned the incident as “absolutely inappropriate” and demanded a full investigation.

  • Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief, sharply criticised the Mahayuti government, saying,

Goons have reached the Vidhan Sabha.”

  • Awhad alleged the attack was premeditated, stating:

“Goons are being allowed to enter… if MLAs aren’t safe in Vidhan Bhavan, what’s the point of being a public representative?”

  • Rohit Pawar, NCP (SP) MLA, compared the chaos to a lawlessness worse than Bihar, citing a collapse in institutional control.

Legislative Response

Both Houses of the legislature took up the matter.

  • Speaker Rahul Narwekar ordered a detailed report and assured strict action.

  • Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar raised concerns about entry pass issuance and security lapses inside the Assembly.

Broader Implications

Kamra’s video, while humorous, underscores growing public disillusionment with Maharashtra’s political climate, where street-level aggression now appears inside legislative halls. His satire continues to highlight a worrying trend of intolerance toward dissent, particularly in creative spaces. Meanwhile, the physical brawl and the reactions it triggered point to a deepening breakdown in political decorum, institutional security, and public trust.
