My son was killed by his family after she made him meet them: According to a Dalit man's father, caste hate

Kavin Selva Ganesh, a 27-year-old Dalit software engineer from Tamil Nadu, was brutally murdered in broad daylight, allegedly by the family of his romantic partner, belonging to the Thevar community. His killing has stirred widespread outrage, with his father and several community leaders labeling it a caste-based honour killing. Kavin, who had been in a relationship with the girl since their school days, had pursued his career in Chennai and worked in a reputed IT firm. His father, Chandrashekar, claimed that Kavin was coerced into meeting the girl by her family, who then plotted his murder. This incident took place outside a private hospital in Thirunelveli, where Kavin had gone to meet his partner. The woman’s brother, Surjeet, allegedly called him out under false pretenses and then hacked him to death with a sickle just a few hundred metres from the hospital.

Following the attack, the accused, 21-year-old Surjeet, initially fled the scene but surrendered to the police later and has been booked under the Goondas Act. The police are also searching for his parents—Saravanan and Krishnakumari—who are both serving as Sub-Inspectors in the Tamil Nadu Police and are currently absconding. The couple has since been suspended from duty. Kavin’s family has refused to accept his body, demanding the arrest of not only Surjeet but also the girl’s parents, holding them responsible for orchestrating the crime. The First Information Report has been registered under several stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, underlining the caste-based nature of the crime.

This horrific incident has sent shockwaves through Tamil Nadu and reignited debates about caste-based violence and honour killings. Political leaders across party lines have condemned the murder. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticized the ruling DMK government for failing to prevent such caste atrocities, describing it as evidence of a failed governance model. Actor and politician Kamal Haasan also spoke out strongly, emphasizing the urgent need to eliminate caste from the social fabric. Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu called the murder both shocking and senseless, especially because the accused belong to the police force, an institution expected to uphold justice and equality. Local caste leaders and community members have also voiced their frustration, with many vowing to organize further protests if justice is delayed.

The incident has opened up a wider conversation about the deep-rooted caste discrimination that still plagues parts of Indian society, despite claims of social progress. As Kavin's death becomes a symbol of systemic injustice, there is a growing call for stricter enforcement of laws protecting marginalized communities and a reevaluation of how caste continues to influence social behavior and family honor. MP Kanimozhi, among others, has called for collective efforts to dismantle such oppressive caste structures, reiterating that individuals should have the right to choose their partners without fear of violence or retribution. The investigation is still ongoing, but the outcry surrounding this case is a stark reminder of the long journey India still has ahead in its fight against caste-based atrocities.
