One person is arrested after a student says she was raped on the IIM-Calcutta campus

A deeply disturbing incident has emerged from the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C), where a woman student has alleged she was raped by a male college mate inside the boys’ hostel. The case has been officially registered, and the Kolkata Police have taken the accused into custody.

Details of the Allegation:

  • According to the FIR filed at Haridevpur Police Station, the woman stated she was invited to the boys’ hostel under the pretext of a counselling session.

  • During the meeting, she was offered a drink that she alleges was laced with drugs, causing her to lose consciousness.

  • When she regained awareness, she realized she had been sexually assaulted.

  • She also alleged that the accused threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident.

The accused was initially detained and was later arrested on Friday night, according to a statement from Kolkata Police.

Current Status:

  • A formal investigation is underway.

  • Forensic analysis and medical reports are expected to be part of the case proceedings.

  • The identity of both the survivor and the accused is being withheld to protect privacy, in line with legal protocols.

IIM Calcutta’s Response:

As of now, IIM-C has not released an official statement on the matter. Given the gravity of the allegations and the institute’s prominence, public pressure is mounting for a formal response outlining support for the survivor and clarification on campus safety measures.

Broader Implications:

This case underscores ongoing concerns about campus safety, sexual violence, and the need for stringent internal redressal mechanisms at India's top academic institutions. The incident also raises serious questions about how accessible mental health or counselling services are, and whether informal peer-led interventions are being misused or left unregulated.

Support and Protection:

Legal experts have emphasized that the woman is entitled to:

  • Protection under IPC Sections 376 (rape) and 328 (causing hurt by poison).

  • Psychological counselling and medical care as part of a victim-centric legal approach.

  • Confidentiality and dignity throughout the proceedings under the Nirbhaya Act framework.

The case is still in its early stages, and further developments are expected as the investigation progresses.

This is a serious and sensitive matter. If you or anyone you know is facing harassment or assault, please seek help through local authorities, women’s helplines, or counselling services.
