Satya Nadella acknowledges that Microsoft's AI transition feels disorganized after firing 15,000 workers


Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently shared a heartfelt message that captures both the human and strategic dimensions of the company’s evolving journey. In 2025, Microsoft has seen over 15,000 job cuts, including about 9,000 in early July alone. These layoffs, while aligned with a larger shift toward artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, have left emotional scars not just on employees, but on Nadella himself. He began his memo by addressing the weight of these decisions, noting the real pain and uncertainty they have caused among staff. Even though the global workforce stood at 2,28,000 in June 2024 and the overall headcount has remained “basically flat” according to Nadella, the impact of job losses has been significant and deeply felt.

Despite the human cost, Microsoft’s strategic pivot is being closely watched and largely applauded by investors. The company’s stock crossed the $500 mark for the first time shortly after the latest round of job cuts, thanks to its leadership in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and enterprise software. Nadella did not shy away from this contrast. In his memo, he admitted that success in tech is complex, often coming with contradictions. He emphasized that progress is rarely straightforward. It is dynamic, filled with challenges, and demands constant evolution. But he also reminded employees that this complexity opens up opportunities for Microsoft to lead and make a lasting impact in the AI age.

Microsoft’s layoffs are part of a broader trend across the tech sector. Over 80,000 jobs have been cut industry-wide in 2025, as companies adjust to an AI-driven future. Recruit Holdings, the company behind platforms like Indeed and Glassdoor, also recently laid off 1,300 employees in its HR tech division, pointing to AI as the reason. Interestingly, while AI is the cause of these job cuts, it’s also the key driver of hope and growth for companies like Microsoft. Its Azure cloud platform is seeing rapid growth, largely because AI companies like OpenAI are heavily relying on Microsoft’s infrastructure and powerful Nvidia chips to build their language models.

Even as Nadella acknowledged the disruption caused by these changes, he made it clear that Microsoft’s mission is evolving. For the past decade, the company’s goal was to empower people and organizations to achieve more. But Nadella believes this mission must now be reimagined in the context of AI. He explained that empowerment in the AI era means creating tools that let people build their own solutions, not just using pre-made software. This marks a major shift—from being a software provider to becoming a platform that enables intelligence and innovation at every level. It’s about giving people the means to shape their digital future rather than handing them finished products.

As Microsoft prepares to announce its fourth-quarter earnings, there is a sense of both anticipation and unease. Employees are grappling with uncertainty, even as the company outlines bold plans for the future. The mood inside Microsoft reflects this tension: a mixture of nervous energy and hope. Nadella’s memo is an attempt to unify the workforce behind a new vision, one that values both innovation and empathy. While Microsoft becomes leaner and more AI-focused, questions remain about how the company will retain its human touch and continue to support its people through this period of transformation.
