Two police officers were suspended for helping a woman who was operating a brothel in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh

In a significant development from Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district, a constable and a home guard have been suspended for their alleged involvement in supporting a woman accused of operating an illegal brothel. The incident occurred in Peddapuram, a town within the district, and has triggered broader disciplinary actions within the police department.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) G Bindu Madhav, a preliminary internal investigation revealed that Constable G Shiva Ramakrishna and Home Guard Ch. Shiva Krishna may have been complicit in assisting the accused woman, who is believed to be running a prostitution racket. Acting swiftly on the findings of the initial inquiry, SP Madhav ordered the immediate suspension of both personnel.

The SP further recommended that disciplinary proceedings be initiated against Sub-Inspector V Mounika and other officers attached to the Peddapuram police station, whose roles in the matter are now under scrutiny. This suggests a deeper level of possible negligence or complicity within the station’s staff that the department is actively investigating.

The suspensions and proposed actions come in the wake of a criminal case registered against a woman named Bharathi, who is reportedly the primary accused in the brothel operation. SP Madhav stated that Bharathi would be apprehended soon and presented before a court of law. To ensure her capture, dedicated police teams have been deployed, and a focused search effort is underway to trace her current location.

In addition to pursuing the primary suspect, the district police have constituted a special investigation team to conduct a thorough and detailed probe into the case. The Superintendent emphasized that raids are being conducted at various locations and that strict measures will be put in place to prevent similar unlawful activities from taking root in Peddapuram or any other parts of the district. The department has reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and eliminating criminal operations such as brothel networks.

Meanwhile, in a separate but related incident earlier this year, a major crackdown occurred in the Rangareddy district of Telangana. In March, police registered two separate cases involving at least 10 transgender individuals, who were accused of operating a brothel and turning a residential neighborhood into a makeshift red-light area. These actions took place in the P&T Colony of the Saroornagar locality.

Law enforcement agencies acted following several complaints lodged by local residents, who reported that certain individuals were regularly assembling on the streets at night. According to complaints and police sources, these groups allegedly solicited customers and engaged in sex work in the open, prompting serious concerns from the community.

Responding to the growing unrest among residents, the Law and Order Department joined hands with the Special Operations Team (SOT) to plan and execute a raid in the affected area. The coordinated operation resulted in the detention of 10 transgender individuals who were allegedly involved in the illegal activities. These developments have underscored the authorities’ broader push to tackle sex trafficking and unauthorised brothel operations across state borders.

Together, these incidents highlight the ongoing efforts by police departments in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to clamp down on illegal sex work and hold both civilians and law enforcement officers accountable when found involved. Authorities continue to emphasize their zero-tolerance policy against criminal activities and the misuse of official positions to abet such crimes.
