Unacceptable: Sena MLA chastised by Devendra Fadnavis for attacking canteen employees

The incident involving Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad assaulting a canteen staffer over alleged poor-quality food has sparked strong political and public backlash, with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemning the act in the state Assembly.

In a pointed response to the viral video showing Gaikwad thrashing the canteen worker, Fadnavis said:

Such behaviour is unacceptable and not honourable to anyone. It tarnishes the image of all legislators. A wrong message goes out that MLAs misuse power.”

Fadnavis was replying to Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Anil Parab, who raised the issue in the Assembly, accusing the ruling side of political arrogance and abuse of authority. Fadnavis maintained that disciplinary action should be considered, adding:

“If there are issues with the food quality, formal complaints can be made and action will follow. But public representatives cannot resort to violence.”

He also urged Council Chairman Ram Shinde and Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar to take cognisance of the matter and act accordingly.

The Incident:

  • Gaikwad, a two-time MLA from Buldhana, was seen in a viral video slapping and berating a staffer at the legislature's canteen.

  • He later claimed he felt unwell after eating stale dal and cited past complaints about lizards, rats, and even ropes being found in food.

  • Speaking to the media, Gaikwad showed no remorse, invoking Bal Thackeray’s aggressive style, stating:

“People who don’t listen need to be cracked down upon.”

Political Fallout:

  • The incident has damaged the image of lawmakers, as pointed out by Fadnavis, and triggered a debate about standards of public conduct by elected representatives.

  • There is likely to be pressure for disciplinary or ethical review in the Assembly or Council.

  • The issue has also reignited criticism of the quality of services in government institutions, but the focus remains on the unjustifiable use of violence.

While poor food quality may be a valid concern, the assault of a staff member by a legislator raises serious questions about accountability, privilege, and abuse of power in public office. The matter now rests with legislative authorities for possible further action.
