Varang is a new antagonist in Avatar Fire and Ash. View the poster for the first peek

James Cameron's upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to expand the universe of Pandora in thrilling new directions. Scheduled for a global release on December 19, 2025, the third installment in the Avatar saga will introduce a powerful new antagonist — Varang, played by Oona Chaplin.

Varang is the fierce leader of the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the Ash People — a fire-adapted tribe of Na’vi who inhabit volcanic terrains. This new environment, complete with rivers of magma and lava-lit landscapes, marks a dramatic shift in the aesthetic and tone of Pandora, moving beyond the lush forests and oceans seen in earlier films.

The first-look poster, revealed on Tuesday, showcases Varang’s striking appearance, including a red-and-black headdress that symbolizes her fiery domain. In early footage shown privately at Disney’s offices, Varang is seen wielding a flamethrower, further cementing her as a formidable force.

One pivotal scene teased in the trailer involves Varang taking Kiri, the daughter of Jake and Neytiri, hostage. She challenges their beliefs by declaring, “Your goddess has no dominion here,” pointing to a major ideological and spiritual conflict among the Na’vi themselves — a first for the franchise.

In an interview with Empire, James Cameron described Varang as a character shaped by hardship. “She’s hardened by what her people have endured. She’ll do anything for them — even things we might view as evil,” he said. This moral complexity is deliberate. Cameron wants the third film to challenge the earlier binary of “Na’vi good, humans bad.” His goal is to explore themes of internal conflict, survival, and loyalty in more nuanced ways.

The film will see the return of key cast members including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, ensuring continuity while also introducing bold new storytelling elements. Produced by 20th Century Studios, Avatar: Fire and Ash is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious and emotionally layered entries in the series — potentially redefining what audiences expect from the world of Pandora.
