The case surrounding Marius Borg Hoiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a relationship before her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, has become one of the most significant legal scandals to touch the royal family in recent history. Hoiby has officially been charged with 32 different offences, including four separate counts of rape, multiple instances of physical assault and violence, as well as domestic abuse directed towards a former partner. The charges extend further to accusations of vandalism, disturbing the peace, and repeated violations of restraining orders against another former partner. The scope and seriousness of these allegations underscore the gravity of the situation, marking a sharp fall from grace for someone raised within the public eye due to his royal connections.
The indictment also includes a disturbing accusation that Hoiby secretly filmed the private parts of several women without their consent or knowledge, which further complicates the case and reflects a troubling pattern of behavior. Public prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo emphasized to reporters that the offences listed carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison. He described the acts as extremely serious, highlighting their potential to cause permanent psychological harm and lasting damage to the lives of those affected. Henriksbo also stressed that Hoiby’s ties to the royal family should in no way influence the course of justice, affirming that he must neither receive leniency nor harsher treatment simply because of his background.
The timeline of the alleged crimes paints an even more troubling picture. The four rapes Hoiby has been charged with are said to have occurred over the years, with incidents reported in 2018, 2023, and 2024. Notably, one of the alleged rapes took place after the official police investigation had already begun, raising questions about his disregard for law enforcement scrutiny. Following his arrest in August 2024, Hoiby admitted to certain charges, including assault and vandalism, specifically linked to the incident that initially placed him under police custody. His admission provided some acknowledgment of guilt, though he has not confessed to the more serious accusations of sexual violence.
In the wake of his arrest, Hoiby released a public statement in which he attempted to explain his behavior by citing his struggles with substance abuse and mental health. He admitted that on the night of the August incident, he had been under the influence of alcohol and cocaine during an argument. He further revealed that he had been battling “mental troubles” for a prolonged period and had long struggled with drug abuse, which he implied had contributed to his destructive actions. His confession of substance dependency, however, has done little to lessen the seriousness of the charges, though it does provide some context for his erratic and violent behavior.
Marius Borg Hoiby has lived much of his life in the public spotlight, having been only four years old when his mother married Crown Prince Haakon. He was subsequently raised within the royal household alongside his step-siblings, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, who are now 21 and 19 years old, respectively. Despite being integrated into the royal family, Hoiby has always stood apart from his step-siblings in one key aspect: unlike them, he has no formal or official role within the monarchy. His position has allowed him greater personal freedom, but it has also distanced him from the expectations and responsibilities typically associated with royal life. This separation now underscores the dramatic contrast between the paths of his royal relatives and the troubling trajectory his own life has taken.
