In Greater Noida’s Sirsa village, a tragic incident unfolded where a 26-year-old woman named Nikki lost her life after being allegedly set ablaze by her husband and in-laws over persistent dowry demands. According to the account of her elder sister Kanchan, who is married into the same household, the horrifying episode took place on Thursday night. Kanchan stated that Nikki was first brutally assaulted and rendered unconscious by her husband, Vipin, before he set her on fire with an inflammable substance. Despite being rushed to Fortis Hospital in Greater Noida in a critical state with severe burn injuries and later referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital for advanced care, Nikki tragically succumbed to her injuries en route.
Police have registered a case against four members of the family: Vipin (the husband), Daya (mother-in-law), Satveer (father-in-law), and Rohit (brother-in-law). Vipin has already been arrested as the primary accused, while search operations are ongoing to apprehend the others. The matter has stirred outrage in the community, especially after a disturbing video surfaced on social media, showing Nikki’s young child alleging that “Papa killed Mummy by burning her with a lighter.” The clip has since gone viral, intensifying public anger.
Kanchan’s complaint revealed that both sisters, married in 2016 into the same family, endured relentless harassment despite their family giving a branded SUV, valuables, and later even another car to meet dowry demands. According to her, the in-laws went so far as to demand an additional Rs 35 lakh, and the abuse never ceased despite multiple interventions through panchayat meetings. Raj Singh, the victim’s uncle, confirmed that both sisters faced routine beatings and constant pressure, and repeated compromises brought no relief.
ADCP Greater Noida Sudhir Kumar stated that police received a memo from Fortis Hospital on the night of the 21st, informing them about a woman admitted with severe burns. Following her death, a case was formally registered based on Kanchan’s statement. Vipin’s arrest has been confirmed, while police teams continue efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining accused. The grieving family and the wider community are now demanding the strictest possible action against all those responsible, with the incident sparking widespread anger and calls for justice.
