According to Anita Anand, Canada's new envoy enhances diplomatic ties with India

Canada has appointed Christopher Cooter as its new High Commissioner to India, a decision that Foreign Minister Anita Anand highlighted as part of Canada’s gradual and deliberate strategy to rebuild diplomatic ties and restore essential services.

The move represents an important milestone in Canada’s effort to strengthen its diplomatic presence in New Delhi. Anand explained that the appointment reflects Canada’s “step-by-step approach to deepening diplomatic engagement and advancing bilateral cooperation with India,” adding that it is a key step toward re-establishing services for Canadians while enhancing the broader relationship to benefit Canada’s economy.

Cooter, a seasoned diplomat with over 35 years of service, has previously held prominent positions including Canada’s Chargé d’affaires to Israel and High Commissioner to South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Mauritius, and Madagascar. Earlier in his career, he also worked as First Secretary at the Canadian High Commission in both India and Nepal, giving him prior experience in the region.

This development follows the commitment made last June at the G7 Summit by Prime Ministers Mark Carney and Narendra Modi to appoint new envoys in each country. According to Anand, “The appointments are an important step towards restoring necessary diplomatic services to citizens and businesses in both countries.”

In a parallel announcement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that senior diplomat Dinesh K. Patnaik, a 1990-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service and currently India’s Ambassador to Spain, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner to Canada. Patnaik is expected to assume his new responsibilities in Ottawa soon.
