Due to religious holidays, Rajasthan prohibits meat and eggs on August 28 and September 6

The Rajasthan government has imposed a two-day ban on the sale of meat and other non-vegetarian items across the state, coinciding with the Paryushan festival and Anant Chaturdashi. As per the official order issued on Monday, all slaughterhouses along with mutton and chicken shops will remain shut on August 28 and September 6, marking the observance of these religious occasions.

For the first time, the ban has also been extended to eggs, restricting their sale throughout the state on both days. Sources revealed that this decision was taken following strong demands put forth by religious organisations, who urged the government to enforce stricter prohibitions during the festivals.

This is not an isolated instance, as similar restrictions have been imposed in other states in recent weeks. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had earlier declared a ban on animal slaughter and meat sales in Bengaluru on August 16 in observance of Krishna Janmashtami. Municipal bodies in Maharashtra also enforced a ban on meat sales on August 15 for Independence Day and again on August 20 in light of upcoming festivals.

However, the move has sparked political controversy in Rajasthan. Opposition leaders from the NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) criticised the decision, calling it an infringement on people’s freedom to choose their food. Adding to the criticism, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar remarked that such measures were unjustified and should not be imposed in a diverse society.

The ban has thus reignited debates around the balance between respecting religious sentiments and safeguarding individual food choices, with sharp political reactions highlighting the polarised views on the issue.
