Ten people were killed and 37 others injured when the bus they were travelling in rammed into the rear of a parked truck on National Highway 19 in Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal. The tragic accident occurred while the bus was en route from Burdwan to Durgapur, carrying pilgrims returning from Gangasagar.
The deceased comprised eight men and two women. Among the injured, one passenger’s condition was reported to be critical. He has been shifted from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for advanced treatment.
According to the district administration, most of the passengers were residents of Motiwari district in Bihar. The bus was carrying a group of pilgrims, including six children, all of whom sustained injuries in the crash. The condition of one of the children is also said to be critical.
“The bus was filled with pilgrims who were returning from Gangasagar. Ten people were killed in the incident. There were six children inside the bus, and the condition of one of them is critical. We are sending him to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for further treatment. The administration is extending all possible help,” said Ayesha Rani A, District Magistrate of Purba Bardhaman.
