Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has once again surfaced in controversy, this time defending Harjinder Singh, a Punjab-origin truck driver responsible for a fatal accident in Florida. Harjinder Singh, who was working illegally in the United States, killed three people after making a prohibited U-turn on the Florida Turnpike. He now faces three counts of vehicular homicide, and the case has drawn significant attention due to both his immigration status and Pannun’s intervention.
Pannun, who is the chief of the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and has been declared a terrorist by India, arrived outside the St. Lucie County Jail to meet Harjinder Singh. Following the meeting, he held a press conference where he attempted to frame the tragedy in political terms. Addressing the media, Pannun said he saw grief in Singh, claiming that the driver deeply regretted the incident and wished he could go back in time to undo his mistake. He insisted that the debate should not be about Harjinder Singh’s immigration status or his actions but rather about grieving the loss of lives and supporting the affected families.
While Pannun did not take up Singh’s legal representation, he openly advocated in his favor, portraying him as a victim of circumstances. He also tried to give the case a political angle by stating that Harjinder Singh had fled India in 2018, fearing persecution on religious and political grounds due to his support for Khalistan. According to US authorities, Singh had illegally entered California in the same year and managed to acquire a commercial driver’s license, enabling him to work as a truck driver despite his undocumented status.
This claim of persecution is a common route taken by many illegal immigrants in Western countries like the US, UK, and Canada to avoid deportation. By branding Singh a pro-Khalistani, Pannun appeared to be using the same narrative that has been exploited by several others in similar situations. Meanwhile, the accident itself has become the center of a growing debate. While three innocent lives were lost due to Harjinder Singh’s reckless driving, an online petition calling for his release has already gained massive traction, with 1.6 million signatures so far.
The controversy is heightened by Pannun’s involvement. Known for issuing threats against major Indian religious and cultural events such as the Mahakumbh and the Ram Mandir consecration, he has consistently attempted to politicize issues to keep himself in the spotlight. By extending his support to Harjinder Singh, Pannun seems to be exploiting the tragedy to further his separatist agenda and present himself as a defender of so-called persecuted Sikhs abroad.
The case not only raises questions about road safety and illegal immigration but also highlights how individuals like Pannun use tragic incidents for political propaganda. For the families of the victims, the focus remains on justice and accountability, but for Pannun, it is another opportunity to stir controversy and maintain relevance on the global stage.
