Security forces successfully neutralized Bagu Khan, also infamously recognized as Samandar Chacha and widely known in militant circles as the “human GPS of terror,” during an operation in the Gurez sector. His death marks the end of his decades-long involvement in aiding and orchestrating infiltration attempts across the Line of Control, a role in which he played a significant part in over one hundred such operations.
Bagu Khan, who earned notoriety under his alias Samandar Chacha, had been operating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) since as far back as 1995. Considered one of the most experienced and dangerous facilitators of cross-border movement, he was gunned down along with another militant while attempting to infiltrate through the Nowshera Naar area.
Security officials revealed that Khan’s extensive knowledge of the Gurez region’s rugged mountainous terrain, secret routes, and hidden pathways allowed him to guide infiltrators with remarkable accuracy, which is why he earned the title of “human GPS.” Over the years, he is believed to have played a direct role in more than a hundred infiltration attempts, the majority of which proved successful because of his skills. This made him an indispensable asset not just for Hizbul Mujahideen, the group he was once formally aligned with, but also for virtually every terror organization operating in the region.
Although he initially rose through the ranks as a commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, his services extended beyond a single group. His deep familiarity with the terrain of Gurez and adjoining sectors made him a common ally for multiple terror outfits, assisting them in charting infiltration routes, coordinating logistics, and ensuring safe passage across the LoC.
Despite evading the Indian security forces for nearly three decades, his run finally came to an end during this latest infiltration attempt. His elimination is being viewed as a significant setback to the cross-border logistical and operational networks of terrorist organizations that have relied heavily on his expertise for years.
This encounter took place just two days after another infiltration bid in the Gurez sector was foiled by the Indian Army. On Thursday, troops intercepted two heavily armed militants trying to cross into Indian territory and eliminated them in a swift operation.
The latest gunfight unfolded near Naushehra Naar as part of Operation Naushera Nar IV, where alert Indian troops engaged a group of infiltrators attempting to breach the border. A brief but intense exchange of fire broke out, culminating in the death of Bagu Khan and his associate, thereby marking a decisive blow to terror groups attempting to exploit the Gurez sector for their activities.
