Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Kartavya Bhawan office complex in Delhi’s Central Vista, marking a major step in the government’s push for modern, sustainable infrastructure. This newly constructed, state-of-the-art facility will serve as the new home for several key ministries, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT), Ministry of Rural Development, the Ministry of MSME, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser.
These ministries currently operate out of decades-old buildings like Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, and Nirman Bhawan—structures built between the 1950s and 1970s that have become increasingly costly to maintain and are no longer suited for modern administrative needs. Kartavya Bhawan aims to resolve these issues by offering a more efficient, secure, and employee-friendly working environment.
Sustainability has been placed at the heart of Kartavya Bhawan’s design. The building incorporates energy-efficient features, including special glass windows that reduce heat and noise, solar panels capable of producing over 5.34 lakh units of electricity annually, rainwater harvesting systems, zero-discharge waste management, and electric vehicle charging stations. These features align with the government’s larger environmental goals and will help significantly reduce operating costs over time.
In terms of technology and security, the complex is equipped with IT-enabled, secure workspaces, smart ID-based access systems, integrated electronic surveillance, and a centralized command system. These elements are expected to streamline operations, improve coordination among ministries, and enhance overall governance.
Kartavya Bhawan represents more than just a change in office space; it reflects a broader vision to modernize the functioning of India’s central government. The project is expected to improve productivity, employee well-being, and public service delivery, while also setting a new standard for government infrastructure in the country.
