Saurabh Bhardwaj of the AAP criticizes the Election Commission for acting like the leader of a BJP cell

AAP leader and Delhi state president Saurabh Bhardwaj launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India, accusing Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar of acting like a spokesperson for the ruling BJP. His criticism stems from the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, which opposition parties have alleged is being influenced to benefit the BJP ahead of upcoming elections.

Bhardwaj accused the Modi government of installing a "yes man" as the CEC, claiming that Kumar's recent statements reflect partisan loyalty rather than constitutional neutrality. He alleged that the Election Commission under Kumar’s leadership appears to be operating more like a political wing of the BJP than an independent institution.

He also took aim at the broader culture of post-retirement appointments for bureaucrats, implying that plum positions, perks, and privileges are being used as rewards for loyalty to the ruling establishment. “After retirement, many bureaucrats get a lot of benefits in the form of bungalows, vehicles, and influence. In return, they echo the government’s position,” he said.

In a symbolic swipe, Bhardwaj urged the CEC to draw inspiration from former Election Commissioner TN Seshan, who is remembered for his uncompromising and independent stance. “The CEC should hang a picture of TN Seshan in his office and look at it every morning and evening. Maybe then he’ll be reminded of the dignity this post demands,” Bhardwaj remarked.

The Election Commission has firmly denied any bias or irregularity in the Bihar voter list revision process, asserting that due process is being followed. However, Bhardwaj’s comments have added fuel to the ongoing debate about the impartiality of India’s electoral watchdog at a time of increasing political polarisation.
