A 15-year-old girl from Odisha’s Puri district, who had been battling for her life for over two weeks after suffering severe burn injuries, died at AIIMS Delhi despite multiple surgeries and intensive treatment. The incident, which occurred on July 19 on the banks of the Bhargavi River, has now spiraled into a complex and politically sensitive case, with contradictory claims from the victim's parents and conflicting findings by the police.
While the victim’s mother alleged in her FIR that three unidentified men kidnapped her daughter, took her to a secluded riverside location, poured petrol on her, and set her on fire, the Odisha Police maintain that their investigation found no involvement of any other individuals. The police said that after recording the victim’s statement and conducting a thorough inquiry, they found no evidence supporting the kidnapping or assault claim. However, they have not explained how the girl caught fire, which has led to further public confusion and outrage.
Adding to the complexity, the girl’s father dismissed the possibility of foul play, stating that his daughter died by suicide due to depression. Urging people to refrain from politicising the tragedy, he thanked the government for its support and assistance during her treatment.
The girl had initially been taken to a local health facility, then transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, and finally airlifted to AIIMS Delhi on July 20 due to the severity of her injuries, which included 75% burns. Despite round-the-clock medical efforts, including skin grafts and intensive care, she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday.
The case has sparked political controversy, with opposition parties like the Biju Janata Dal and Congress accusing the BJP-led state government of failing to ensure women’s safety and mishandling the investigation. Critics argue that the contradictory statements from the parents and the lack of transparency from the police have further undermined public trust.
BJD chief and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep sorrow over the girl’s death and extended condolences to the family, emphasizing the need for justice and compassion in such a sensitive matter.
As the investigation concludes and the political tension rises, the truth behind the young girl’s tragic death remains mired in uncertainty, leaving the public demanding clarity, accountability, and above all, justice.
