A tragic incident in Lucknow has spotlighted glaring deficiencies in emergency healthcare infrastructure, as a 70-year-old man died after allegedly being denied timely medical attention. Kashi Prasad Goswami, a resident of Sarojini Nagar, was first taken to a private hospital on Thursday evening after he began experiencing severe respiratory distress. Although doctors initially managed to stabilize him with oxygen, they quickly referred him to King George's Medical University (KGMU) once his condition deteriorated, citing the need for advanced care.
According to Ashutosh Giri, Goswami’s son-in-law, the family raced to KGMU’s trauma center in hopes of urgent intervention. However, what followed was an agonizing wait of nearly four hours, during which time Goswami lay unattended on a stretcher. Despite repeated pleas to the hospital staff for a bed and oxygen, they were consistently told that no space was available. Giri claimed that not a single doctor examined Goswami during their long wait, and the family's requests for assistance were met with silence.
With no signs of assistance forthcoming, the family was left with no choice but to return to the same private hospital they had initially visited. Tragically, Goswami passed away shortly after being brought back, prompting the family to level accusations of medical negligence against both the private hospital and KGMU. Giri described the ordeal as one of utter helplessness, stating that Goswami’s oxygen levels continued to fall while the family’s appeals for help went unanswered.
On its part, KGMU denied allegations of negligence and explained that the patient could not be admitted due to a shortage of ventilator-equipped beds. Dr. Sudhir Singh, a spokesperson for the institution, confirmed that Goswami was asked to wait for a bed to become available. He added that the patient and his family left the hospital before any alternative arrangements could be completed.
The incident has triggered widespread public outrage, drawing attention to the critical gaps in emergency preparedness at even the most prominent government-run hospitals. It has reignited debates around healthcare access, especially for patients in life-threatening conditions. The family has since demanded accountability, urging that appropriate action be taken against the hospital administration for what they believe was entirely preventable negligence.
