A tragic road accident in Delhi claimed the life of a senior Finance Ministry official and left his wife critically injured. The victim, Navjot Singh, who was serving as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, was returning home with his wife after paying respects at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara when their motorcycle was struck by a speeding BMW near Dhaula Kuan on Ring Road. The collision, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, caused immediate chaos in the area, with traffic piling up as both the bike and the luxury car came to a halt near the divider.
When the police arrived following multiple calls about the jam, they found the BMW turned sideways and the motorcycle badly damaged. According to eyewitnesses, a woman was at the wheel of the BMW while her husband sat beside her. After the crash, the couple reportedly hailed a taxi and transported the injured victims to a hospital rather than waiting for an ambulance. The injured Navjot Singh was rushed to Newlife Hospital in GTB Nagar, but doctors declared him dead. His wife, who sustained grievous injuries, is currently battling for her life.
The family, however, has raised several troubling questions about the handling of the aftermath. Singh’s son, Navnoor Singh, alleged that his father’s life could have been saved had he been taken to a nearby superspeciality hospital or AIIMS, which are equipped with advanced trauma care facilities. Instead, the victims were transported nearly 17 to 20 kilometres away to Newlife Hospital, a facility that, according to him, lacked the capacity to treat such severe injuries. He further claimed that this hospital had links to the accused, as the woman driving the BMW and her husband were also admitted there following the crash.
Navnoor recounted his anguish, saying that he had last spoken to his mother when she was on her way to the gurdwara. Later, he received a devastating call from a family friend about the accident. “A girl driving a BMW hit my parents’ motorcycle. My father could have been saved if they had rushed him to a nearby trauma centre,” he said, expressing deep suspicion about why his parents were diverted to a private hospital so far away. He added that his mother, after regaining partial consciousness, found herself seated in the passenger side of a van while his father lay lifeless behind her. Witnesses at the site told him that it is rare for death to occur instantly in such accidents, reinforcing his belief that negligence — or even deliberate intent — may have worsened the tragedy.
The BMW involved in the accident was found with deployed airbags and extensive damage, indicating the force of the impact. Police confirmed that the vehicle had been seized and that the couple from Gurugram, who were inside the car, also sustained injuries. The husband is reportedly a businessman, and both remain admitted to the hospital. Meanwhile, crime teams and forensic experts have examined the accident site to collect evidence.
As outrage grows, the Delhi Police stated that legal proceedings are underway and that an FIR is being registered in the case. The incident not only highlights the dangers of reckless driving in the capital but also raises disturbing questions about accountability, transparency, and the treatment of victims in high-profile accidents. The family of Navjot Singh is now demanding justice, urging that a thorough probe be conducted to uncover the truth behind both the accident and the questionable decisions that followed.
