In Karnataka, BJP legislator BP Harish has landed in serious controversy after a derogatory remark he made against Davanagere Superintendent of Police (SP) Uma Prashanth prompted legal action. The MLA from Harihar constituency was booked following a formal complaint filed by the SP herself, after he compared her conduct to that of a "pet dog" while accusing her of favoritism towards the influential Congress stronghold, the Shamanuru family.
The incident unfolded earlier this week during a press conference, where Harish claimed that SP Uma Prashanth displayed deliberate indifference towards him in official meetings but allegedly went out of her way to accommodate the powerful Shamanuru family. "If I go to a meeting, she does not acknowledge me properly. But for the Shamanuru family — Shivashankarappa, his minister son SS Mallikarjun, and MP Prabha Mallikarjun — she will wait an hour at the gate, behaving like a Pomeranian dog at their house," Harish was quoted as saying by PTI. His remarks quickly sparked outrage, with many criticizing both the disrespect shown towards a senior woman police officer and the offensive language used.
SP Uma Prashanth subsequently lodged a complaint against the legislator, leading to a case being registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to deterring a public servant from duty, criminal intimidation, and insulting the modesty of a woman. The development has not only drawn attention to the ongoing tensions between BJP leaders and Congress representatives in the region but has also raised broader questions about gender sensitivity and respect for administrative officials.
The controversy is amplified by the stature of the Shamanuru family, one of the most powerful political dynasties in central Karnataka. The family patriarch, Shamanuru Shivashankarappa, is a veteran Congress leader and among the party’s most senior legislators. His son, SS Mallikarjun, serves as the Minister for Mines, Geology, and Horticulture in the Siddaramaiah-led government, while Shivashankarappa’s daughter-in-law, Prabha Mallikarjun, represents the family in Parliament as a Congress MP. With such significant political influence, the family has long been at the center of regional power dynamics, making Harish’s comments both politically charged and personally offensive.
The case now threatens to deepen the political divide in Davanagere, where the BJP and Congress have often clashed for dominance. At the same time, it highlights the growing scrutiny over how public representatives conduct themselves in matters involving government officials, especially women in positions of authority.
