French President Emmanuel Macron, while grappling with political and economic challenges on the domestic front, has underscored the importance of recognising a Palestinian state as a strategic step to weaken and isolate Hamas. In a recent interview with Israel’s Channel 12 television, Macron firmly separated the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people from the violent actions of Hamas, making it clear that the suffering endured by Palestinians cannot be equated with the militant group’s agenda.
According to Macron, the recognition of Palestinian statehood is not merely symbolic but a practical move that could delegitimise Hamas and pave the way for renewed discussions on a two-state solution. He emphasised that France, alongside Britain, is preparing to advocate for such recognition at the United Nations General Assembly this month. The underlying goal, he explained, is to create a political environment that marginalises Hamas while promoting the rights and representation of the Palestinian people through lawful and internationally recognised means.
The French President did not shy away from sharply criticising Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. He characterised the relentless offensive as “totally counterproductive and a failure,” arguing that far from ensuring security, such operations are undermining Israel’s global standing. Macron pointed out that the military campaign has eroded Israel’s credibility not only in the Middle East but also in the broader sphere of international public opinion, thereby jeopardising its long-term interests.
When asked about the possibility of economic sanctions in light of the situation, Macron acknowledged that it could become a serious point of debate should the Israeli government continue with its operations in Gaza City. While stopping short of an outright call for sanctions, his remarks suggested that France is prepared to consider tougher diplomatic and economic measures if the crisis escalates further.
By pushing for recognition of Palestinian statehood and condemning Israel’s aggressive military strategy, Macron has positioned himself as a vocal advocate for recalibrating international efforts toward peace. His remarks signal France’s intention to play a more assertive role in shaping the discourse on the Arab-Israeli conflict, even as he faces mounting pressures at home.
