West Bengal BJP leader and Asansol South MLA Agnimitra Paul was rushed to a private hospital in Kolkata on Thursday night after suddenly feeling unwell. Doctors later confirmed that she had suffered a mild brain stroke during a routine health check-up, prompting her immediate admission to Fortis Hospital.
The 52-year-old legislator is currently under the supervision of senior physician Dr. Amit Halder. According to hospital sources, her condition is stable, and she is being closely monitored for the next 48 hours as a precautionary measure. While doctors have indicated that there is nothing alarming about her health at present, she will undergo additional tests before a decision is taken regarding her discharge.
Paul’s hospitalisation came just hours after a stormy session in the West Bengal Assembly, where BJP MLAs clashed with Trinamool Congress legislators during a heated debate. The uproar began during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s address, when BJP members staged loud protests inside the House. Despite repeated warnings from Speaker Biman Banerjee, the disruptions continued, eventually leading to the suspension of BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh. The situation escalated further when marshals were called in to remove him, sparking a scuffle in which Paul was also caught up.
Both Paul and Ghosh had to be taken to the hospital following the incident. The episode added to the already tense political climate in the state, with the BJP accusing the ruling party of stifling opposition voices, while the TMC maintained that order in the Assembly had to be upheld.
This is not the first time Agnimitra Paul has faced health complications in recent months. Just last month, she was admitted to hospital with severe breathing difficulties and was later diagnosed with a respiratory ailment. Her repeated health issues have raised concerns among party workers and supporters, many of whom have gathered outside the hospital to wish her a speedy recovery.
