An arch collapses at Chennai's thermal power plant, killing nine people and injuring numerous more

A tragic accident struck the North Chennai Thermal Power Station construction site in Ennore on Tuesday, claiming the lives of nine workers and leaving ten others injured. The mishap occurred when an under-construction arch collapsed from a height of nearly 30 feet, trapping several migrant workers under the debris. The collapse caused widespread panic at the site as fellow workers and locals rushed to rescue those stuck. Emergency teams quickly transported the injured to Stanley Government Hospital in North Chennai, where one worker was reported to be in critical condition while more than ten others were being treated for serious injuries.

Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Chairman of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), immediately visited the hospital to meet the injured and review the situation. Authorities assured that all necessary medical care was being provided to the victims and that the government would extend support to their families.

Meanwhile, the Avadi Police Commissionerate confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing at the site to ensure no worker remained trapped. The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, and an investigation has been launched to identify lapses in safety protocols and accountability. Officials noted that a technical inquiry would follow to prevent similar accidents in the future.

This incident comes against the backdrop of another arch-related mishap earlier this year in February, when Madurai’s iconic Mattuthavani Bus Stand arch, constructed in 1981 during MG Ramachandran’s rule, collapsed during demolition work. At that time, an earthmover operator lost his life, and the contractor suffered serious injuries after a pillar fell unexpectedly. The recurrence of such incidents has raised serious questions about construction safety standards in Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the Ennore tragedy and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. Through a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office on X, he said he was deeply saddened by the mishap and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. He also declared an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased worker and ₹50,000 for each injured person.

The heartbreaking accident has once again brought to the fore concerns about the safety of migrant workers employed in high-risk construction projects. With the rescue operation and inquiry still underway, both the government and the public are demanding answers to ensure accountability and stricter enforcement of safety norms in future infrastructure developments.
