A shocking incident unfolded in Gorakhpur on Wednesday night when a man fatally shot his wife after a heated argument outside a photo studio. The woman, identified as 30-year-old Mamta alias Mukti Chauhan, had gone to the studio on Jail Road around 8 pm when the altercation broke out. In the midst of the quarrel, her husband, Vishwakarma Chauhan, pulled out a country-made pistol and shot her in the chest, causing her to collapse on the spot.
Local residents rushed the severely injured woman to Vinayak Hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. The accused fled the scene immediately after the shooting, but police later apprehended him and took him into custody for questioning.
Investigations revealed that the couple had been embroiled in a bitter property dispute for the past decade, which had strained their marriage. They had been living separately for the last one-and-a-half years. While Mamta worked at a private company on Bank Road and lived with her 13-year-old daughter, Vishwakarma was staying in a rented house on Jail Road.
According to police, tensions between the two reached a breaking point when Vishwakarma confronted Mamta at the studio. The argument quickly escalated, leading to the fatal attack. Authorities confirmed that the accused is now being interrogated, while Mamta’s death has left the local community shaken by the brutality of the crime.
