Ananya Birla on striking a balance between leadership, music, and business

At the India Today Conclave Mumbai 2025, Ananya Birla, Director of Aditya Birla Management Corporation, reflected on her multifaceted journey as an entrepreneur, musician, and leader. The 31-year-old explained how early life choices continue to guide her professionally and personally.

Ananya recalled that at 17, driven by a desire to create something of her own and promote financial inclusion, she launched Swatantra Microfin. Despite limited support initially, the venture has grown into India’s second-largest microfinance institution, maintaining robust returns even amid industry challenges.

Alongside her business pursuits, Ananya followed her passion for music, describing it as deeply cathartic. She shared that every song she writes comes from her heart and experiences, and that even touching one listener makes the effort worthwhile. Discipline sustains her through morning practice, long office hours, and late-night studio sessions, often leaving little room for a social life. She also emphasized reliance on innate belief, hard work, and clear intentions, accepting setbacks as part of a larger plan.

On leadership, Ananya highlighted her informal, empathetic style, staying close to her team, and implementing policies like menstrual and mental health leave. As the first woman in her family’s business legacy, she acknowledged self-imposed pressure but channels it as motivation, striving to make her parents proud. She underscored that values such as honesty, integrity, teamwork, and equality are central to her life and have sustained generations of her family.
