Donald Trump claims that a Supreme Court ruling on tariffs would make the United States the richest nation

US President Donald Trump claimed that a Supreme Court victory in the legal battle over his global tariffs would make America “by far the richest country anywhere in the world” and grant the administration “tremendous power to negotiate.” Speaking to reporters ahead of a trip to the UK, Trump highlighted that his use of tariffs had enabled him to “settle seven wars,” attributing four of them specifically to his tariff policies.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in November on whether Trump overstepped his authority by imposing tariffs on imports from China, India, and other countries. Lower courts ruled that his administration acted illegally, emphasizing that Congress—not the president—holds constitutional authority over tariffs.

Small businesses and several states challenged the measures, claiming that the tariffs nearly drove them to bankruptcy. Jeffrey Schwab, attorney for the Liberty Justice Center leading the legal challenge, said, “Congress, not the President alone, has the power to impose tariffs.”

Although two lower courts struck down the tariffs, a divided appeals court allowed them to remain in effect temporarily. The Trump administration has urged the Supreme Court to expedite the case, warning that removing the tariffs now could push the US “on the brink of economic catastrophe.”

This upcoming ruling is expected to be one of the most consequential trade decisions in decades, as it will define the limits of presidential power in imposing tariffs for both economic and foreign policy objectives.
