Russia and Ethiopia have signed an agreement to plan and construct a nuclear power plant in Ethiopia, according to RIA news agency, citing Rosatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation.
The document was signed during a nuclear power forum by Aleksei Likhachev, Rosatom’s general director, and Ashebir Balcha, CEO of the Ethiopian Electric Company. It outlines the creation of a detailed construction plan, a “road map” covering the technical and economic aspects of the project, and an intergovernmental agreement to move forward.
The deal also includes provisions for training personnel to operate the plant and developing Ethiopia’s broader nuclear sector.
In the region, South Africa currently hosts Africa’s only operational nuclear power plant, while Egypt is constructing reactors. Niger has also expressed plans to build two 2,000-megawatt reactors in partnership with Rosatom.
