Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was hospitalized after suffering a damaged back in an automobile accident

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and one-time Republican presidential candidate, is recovering from multiple injuries after a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday evening, his spokesperson confirmed.

Giuliani, 81, sustained a fractured thoracic vertebra, lacerations, contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg when his rental vehicle was rear-ended on a highway. He was treated at a nearby trauma center and is said to be in “good spirits” and recovering well, according to Michael Ragusa, Giuliani’s head of security.

The crash occurred shortly after Giuliani had assisted a woman involved in a domestic violence incident by contacting the police. Ragusa emphasized that the collision was unrelated to that situation and that Giuliani’s vehicle was not targeted.

Dubbed “America’s mayor” for his leadership in New York City following the September 11, 2001, attacks, Giuliani served as the city’s 107th mayor from 1994 to 2001. He later became Donald Trump’s personal attorney and was a leading voice in pushing unproven claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

In recent years, Giuliani has faced mounting legal and financial troubles, including a $148 million defamation judgment in favor of two Georgia election workers he falsely accused of misconduct. A subsequent court dispute over his assets ended in a deal allowing him to keep his homes and personal belongings in exchange for compensation and an agreement to stop making defamatory statements.
