Jaishankar welcomes the appointment of high commissioners and talks with Anita Anand of Canada

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New York, describing the meeting as productive and welcoming the appointment of envoys to rebuild bilateral ties between India and Canada. Jaishankar highlighted the steps being discussed to strengthen relations and expressed anticipation of Anand’s visit to India.

In August, India announced Dinesh Patnaik as its next High Commissioner to Canada. Last week, Patnaik formally presented his credentials to Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon, engaging in discussions aimed at enhancing India-Canada cooperation. Patnaik, a 1990-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, emphasized the mutual interest in strengthening bilateral relations during his tete-a-tete with the Governor General.

The recent exchange of envoys comes after a period of strained relations between the two countries following the 2023 killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This incident led to mutual expulsions of diplomats and a diplomatic stand-off, causing India-Canada ties to hit an unprecedented low.

Efforts to restore relations were furthered in June when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 summit in Kananaskis. Both leaders committed to constructive measures for stability, including the timely return of diplomatic envoys, signaling a cautious reset in bilateral engagement.

The recent appointments and diplomatic meetings mark a concerted effort to rebuild trust and collaboration, paving the way for a more stable and cooperative relationship between India and Canada.
