Heavy rain continued to lash central and southern Kerala, leading authorities in Thiruvananthapuram to declare a holiday for all educational institutions on Friday, September 26. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for eight districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur, warning of more downpours across the region.
According to IMD reports, widespread showers drenched the central and southern parts of the state on Thursday, with Lower Sholayar in Thrissur recording the highest rainfall at 80 mm. Pathanamthitta followed with 68 mm, while Karumadi in Alappuzha registered 55 mm. Thiruvananthapuram city itself recorded 29 mm of rainfall. On Friday, alerts remained in effect across the same eight districts, spanning from Thrissur down to southern Thiruvananthapuram.
Meteorologists said the intense showers were triggered by a low-pressure area that had formed over north Odisha and the adjoining Bay of Bengal. Although the system weakened, it left behind a cyclonic circulation that fueled heavy rainfall across Kerala, with Lakshadweep also experiencing showers. Authorities have urged residents, particularly in vulnerable areas, to remain cautious as wet and unstable conditions are expected to persist.
