New images of the person of interest in Charlie Kirk's murder are released by the FBI

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has intensified its manhunt for the killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, releasing new images of a person of interest and offering a substantial reward for information leading to an arrest. On Thursday, the FBI made public surveillance photographs of a man believed to be in his mid-30s, dressed in a dark hoodie and baseball cap, who was spotted near the crime scene at Utah Valley University shortly before Kirk was fatally shot. Officials stressed that the individual has not yet been formally identified but urged members of the public to come forward with any tips that might help investigators track him down. To encourage cooperation, the FBI announced a reward of $100,000 for actionable information leading directly to the suspect’s identification and capture.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative commentator, founder of Turning Point USA, and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, has sent shockwaves through political and academic circles. Kirk was addressing an audience of around 3,000 people as part of his “Prove Me Wrong” campus tour when a single bullet struck him in the neck, killing him. Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing the scene on foot moments after the shot rang out. According to investigators, security footage later revealed that the shooter had accessed a rooftop through stairwells before opening fire, suggesting a degree of planning and premeditation. The FBI has since established a dedicated tip line, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to reach out.

The attack, which authorities have described as a targeted killing, has further fueled the national debate over political violence and free speech on American campuses. Charlie Kirk, known for his sharp criticism of “woke culture” and his unapologetic right-wing positions, had long been a polarizing figure in higher education spaces. That he was gunned down while speaking on campus only amplifies concerns about the growing volatility of the intersection between politics and academia in the United States. President Trump quickly condemned the killing, calling Kirk a “patriot” and announcing that he would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honour.

As the investigation deepens, authorities have revealed new evidence recovered from the suspected escape route. In a wooded area near Utah Valley University, investigators found a high-powered rifle believed to have been used in the shooting, along with a palm print and a shoe impression. These forensic leads could be vital in narrowing the search, though no motive has yet been publicly disclosed. Officials confirmed that two individuals detained in the immediate aftermath of the attack have since been released, shifting the focus squarely back onto the unidentified person of interest. FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls emphasized that federal and state law enforcement agencies are working in close coordination, describing the case as “a developing investigation” with progress being made.

The aftermath of Kirk’s assassination has already begun to reshape the political and cultural landscape. Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha, travelled to Utah to meet Kirk’s grieving family, before escorting his casket aboard Air Force Two to Phoenix, the headquarters of Turning Point USA. The symbolism of the gesture underscores Kirk’s stature within conservative circles, where he was widely regarded as one of the most influential young voices aligned with the Make America Great Again movement.

At the same time, the killing has reignited fierce debate over the state of free expression, tolerance, and political violence in American universities. For many, the murder represents not just the silencing of a conservative activist but also a chilling signal of how campus discourse has grown increasingly hostile and dangerous. The FBI’s nationwide manhunt, backed by a six-figure reward, illustrates both the urgency of the investigation and the recognition that this assassination could mark a turning point in America’s struggle with ideological extremism and its consequences.
