Rajnath Singh unveils a new defense wing in Rabat, and India and Morocco sign a defense partnership

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday announced the establishment of a new Defence Wing at the Indian Embassy in Rabat, marking a significant step forward in strengthening defence cooperation between India and Morocco. The announcement came following Singh’s talks with his Moroccan counterpart Abdeltif Loudiyi, during which both leaders underlined their shared commitment to scaling up defence relations. To formalise this partnership, the two ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that sets up a structured institutional framework for sustained collaboration. The agreement covers multiple aspects, including defence industry partnerships, joint military exercises, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives, thereby laying the foundation for long-term defence cooperation.

During the discussions, both sides reached an understanding on a comprehensive roadmap to deepen cooperation in several strategic areas. These included counter-terrorism operations, maritime security, cyber defence, peacekeeping missions, and the field of military medicine. They also emphasised the importance of expert exchanges to promote mutual learning and the sharing of best practices. Singh, while highlighting India’s strengths in the defence manufacturing sector, pointed out that Indian companies possess advanced capabilities in areas such as drones and counter-drone systems, which are well-suited to meet Morocco’s emerging security needs. This assertion demonstrated India’s readiness to position itself as a key partner in Morocco’s defence modernisation efforts.

Both Singh and Loudiyi stressed the necessity of expanding exchanges between their armed forces to foster greater interoperability and trust. They agreed that co-development and co-production in defence technologies would not only serve the interests of both nations but also contribute to regional stability. The ministers also emphasised the importance of enhanced cooperation in multilateral forums to tackle pressing regional and global security challenges. Special attention was given to maritime security, with both sides acknowledging the strategic significance of the Indian Ocean and Atlantic corridors and the need for closer coordination in safeguarding these vital routes.

In a gesture aimed at further consolidating ties, Singh extended an invitation to Loudiyi to visit India for continued discussions and engagement. Both ministers described the agreement as a milestone in bilateral defence ties, reflecting their growing strategic convergence and a shared vision for security cooperation. The move to establish the Defence Wing in Rabat, combined with the broad-based MoU, signalled a new chapter in India-Morocco relations, one that is expected to bring their defence and security partnership to an unprecedented level.
