The Brics nations strongly denounce the Pahalgam attack as criminal and unacceptable

The BRICS nations issued a strong joint statement on Saturday condemning the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that occurred on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people and injured many others. In their statement, the member countries described all acts of terrorism as “criminal and unjustifiable” and reiterated their collective commitment to combat terrorism in every form and manifestation. The statement emphasized that terrorism should never be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group, and that all individuals involved in terrorist activities, as well as those who support them, must be held accountable under both national and international law.

The BRICS ministers highlighted the importance of zero tolerance toward terrorism and condemned any double standards in counter-terror efforts. They stressed that the primary responsibility for combating terrorism rests with individual states, and that global initiatives to address terror threats must comply with international legal frameworks, including the UN Charter, human rights conventions, refugee protection protocols, and humanitarian law. The joint statement further called for concerted international actions against all UN-designated terrorists and terrorist entities, asserting that such acts must be met with accountability, irrespective of the motivation, location, or perpetrators involved.

The declaration comes amid growing global attention on terrorism, following similar condemnation by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on September 1, which expressed deepest sympathy and condolences to the families affected by the Pahalgam attack. While the SCO statement refrained from naming Pakistan, despite India’s long-standing allegations that Islamabad provides safe havens to terror outfits, it stressed that perpetrators, organizers, and sponsors of such violent acts must be brought to justice. The BRICS statement aligns with this broader international consensus, reinforcing the collective resolve of member nations to counter terrorism and uphold global security through coordinated, lawful measures.
