Trump will not profit from hosting the 2026 G20 meeting at his golf property in Florida

United States President Donald Trump has announced that the 2026 Group of 20 (G20) summit will be hosted at his Trump National Doral Miami golf club near Miami. The decision immediately sparked debate as the property is owned by Trump himself, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

Trump defended the choice, saying that Doral would be the “best location” for the gathering. The G20, which rotates its hosting duties among members, brings together leaders from 19 countries, the European Union, and the African Union. While the venue has been confirmed, no official date for the 2026 summit has been set.

The White House stated that attendees would be charged “at-cost” for services at the resort, arguing that there would be no personal profit involved. Despite these assurances, critics have pointed out that Trump has faced repeated scrutiny for blending his business interests with official responsibilities. Previous instances include hosting foreign leaders at Mar-a-Lago in Florida and at various Trump-owned golf courses and hotels.

This is not the first time Trump has attempted to host a global summit at one of his properties. During his first term, he suggested holding the 2020 Group of Seven (G7) summit at Doral but dropped the plan after facing bipartisan criticism that it could violate the US Constitution.

The announcement comes as Trump confirmed he will not attend this year’s G20 summit in South Africa. Instead, Vice President JD Vance will represent the United States. The move is being seen as a way for Trump to maintain domestic focus while delegating international appearances to his deputy.

Trump’s business portfolio remains vast, including real estate, licensing deals, and recent ventures in cryptocurrency and meme tokens, which have significantly boosted his wealth on paper. Critics argue that decisions like hosting the G20 at Doral reinforce perceptions of Trump merging personal business with presidential duties.

Trump National Doral Miami is a luxury resort that spans a large area with multiple facilities, including a grand ballroom, restaurants, spas, pools, and extensive event space, making it well-suited for large gatherings. Its scale and amenities were key factors in the decision, according to the White House.

The US State Department had earlier called for proposals from cities interested in hosting the 2026 G20 summit. It remains unclear if Miami or Doral officially submitted a bid before Trump announced the selection of his own property. The choice has now positioned the resort to gain significant global attention, while also reigniting the debate over ethics and governance under Trump’s leadership.
