Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Monday that a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the killing of former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy. He stressed that the murder was premeditated and that investigators are working urgently to piece together the full picture behind the crime. According to Zelenskyy, the detained suspect has already provided an initial statement to the authorities, and investigative teams are actively carrying out further operations to determine the complete set of circumstances surrounding the killing.
Parubiy, aged 54, was fatally shot in the city of Lviv on Saturday. Zelenskyy described the incident as a brutal and shocking act of violence, emphasizing that it represents a grave security issue for Ukraine, a nation already under the strain of ongoing war. Parubiy had served as parliamentary speaker between April 2016 and August 2019 and was widely recognized for his prominent role in the 2013–2014 protests advocating for Ukraine’s closer integration with the European Union.
In his remarks, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to law enforcement officials for their rapid and coordinated response, adding that it is imperative to uncover every aspect of the assassination. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko later reported that the suspected shooter had been arrested in the Khmelnytskyi region, also located in western Ukraine. Klymenko noted that while many specific details could not yet be disclosed, the evidence indicates that the attack was meticulously organized. Investigators believe the perpetrator closely tracked Parubiy’s daily movements, charted his routes, and even prepared a detailed escape strategy before carrying out the killing.
