A tractor overturns in a river in Ujjain during Durga immersion, killing two people and injuring four more


A tragic accident took place in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh during the Durga idol immersion ceremony, leading to the death of two people and injuries to four others. The incident occurred when a tractor-trolley carrying devotees lost control and overturned into the Chambal River on Thursday. What was meant to be a religious and celebratory occasion quickly turned into a scene of chaos and grief as families and villagers struggled to save those trapped in the waters.

According to Ujjain Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abhishek Ranjan, around 12 devotees, including children and youngsters, were travelling in the trolley at the time of the mishap. While narrating the incident, he said that during the immersion ritual, both the tractor and the trolley accidentally fell into the river. Out of the 12 people, eight were able to escape safely from the waters with the help of locals, while four sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, two devotees lost their lives in the tragic turn of events.

As soon as news of the accident reached authorities, police teams and the local administration rushed to the site and initiated rescue operations. Divers, villagers, and officials worked together to bring people out of the water and ensure immediate medical attention for the injured. ASP Ranjan expressed his condolences, stating that the entire administration was saddened by the loss of lives and that prayers were being offered for the speedy recovery of those admitted to the hospital.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations to ascertain the exact cause of death, while the injured continue to receive medical care. Officials have also begun a detailed inquiry into how the accident took place, whether negligence or overloading contributed to the tragedy, and what preventive measures can be taken in the future. The heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over the festive atmosphere in Ujjain, reminding everyone of the need for strict safety measures during large-scale religious processions and immersions.
