A young niece of RG Kar, a rape-murder convicted felon, was discovered hanging in Kolkata

An 11-year-old girl, who was the niece of the convict in the infamous RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, was found hanging at her home in Kolkata. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation into the matter. Preliminary reports suggest that the tragic incident occurred when the girl was alone at home on Sunday.

According to officials, the young girl had been living with her aunt, Pooja Roy, following the death of her mother. On the day of the incident, her family members had gone to the market, leaving her at home. When they returned, they found the door to her room locked from inside. Despite repeated calls, there was no response. Concerned, they eventually broke open the door and discovered the girl hanging from a structure attached to the wardrobe.

The family immediately informed the police, prompting officers to rush to the scene. The authorities examined the spot and later sent the girl’s body to SSKM Hospital for a postmortem examination. A police source told India Today that the case appeared to be one of “partial hanging,” as part of the child’s legs was reportedly touching the ground, raising questions about the exact nature of her death.

Following the postmortem, police officials confirmed that the death was antemortem and caused by hanging. However, they are continuing to probe the circumstances to determine whether it was a case of suicide or if any foul play was involved. A case of unnatural death has been filed at the Alipore police station, and investigators are now questioning family members and neighbours to gather more information.

Authorities are also trying to ascertain whether the girl was under emotional distress, possibly suffering from depression, or if external factors contributed to her tragic end. The incident has left the local community deeply disturbed, especially given the family’s connection to a high-profile criminal case that had already drawn widespread attention.

The case has revived memories of the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, in which the girl’s uncle, Sanjay Roy, was convicted. Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, had been sentenced to life imprisonment last year for brutally raping and murdering a 26-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor inside the premises of RG Kar Medical College.

The brutal nature of that earlier crime had triggered massive outrage and weeks of protests by healthcare workers demanding better safety measures in medical institutions. Now, with this fresh tragedy involving his niece, tension and speculation have once again gripped the area, prompting renewed discussions about the mental toll such incidents can have on the families of convicts.
