Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. According to police reports, the senior IPS officer shot himself in the head with his service revolver while seated on a chair in the basement of his house.
Before taking the extreme step, Kumar reportedly directed all his security personnel to leave the premises and then went alone to the soundproof basement, where he fired the fatal shot. The incident was reported around 1:30 pm to the Sector 11 Police Station.
Following the incident, police teams and forensic experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) reached the scene to conduct a detailed investigation. Officers are questioning all individuals present in the house at the time to determine the sequence of events and possible reasons behind the suicide. The officer’s body has been sent to the Sector 16 Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Confirming the development, Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur said, “The body of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was found at his residence. The CFSL team has reached the spot, and an investigation is underway. More details will be known after the post-mortem.”
At the time of the incident, Kumar’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, was in Japan as part of an official delegation led by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
Y Puran Kumar, a senior officer of the Haryana cadre, was widely respected in police circles and had held several key positions during his distinguished career. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the police and administrative community.
